I quite like watching sports personality of the year for the yearly round up of sports. It is a staple that along with the Darts begins the run up to Christmas with the world's strongest man fills the Christmas to New Year void along with all the other sport.

From a sporting point of view there is a few that have missed out on nominations who had a stronger case than one or two on the list. Yes I know it is no longer about merit but still not sure why some are not there.

Are they really saying Masi keeping the safety car out makes a difference to Hamiltons inclusion?

The Kenny's and Archibald from cycling have a stronger case than Tom Daley and Sterling although I can understand having an English footballer there.

Duncan Scott out performed Daley at the Olympics.

Cavendish should be nominated too.

Cavendish every day of the week for me. What he did was an extraordinary feat. Both from a career perspective equalling Merckx's record and coming back from a career that was basically over to shake things up like that.

Daley over him is an odd one, but there you go. Guess we'll always go for the sports we follow a bit more.

Lewis will win after yesterday’s GP. Sympathy/anger vote.

Would've thought radacanu would have a decent shout, although I don't really follow spoty much. I agree that Cavendish's exploits this year were stupendous

Who are the team nominees?

SPOTY used to be my favourite program, unmissable every year. But it’s now utter shite with no sport, crap little games and excruciating interviews.

I blame Sue Barker for this and the demise of Question of Sport.

Team nominees not announced yet.

Raducanu will likely win. The likes of Peatty who has been utterly dominant rarely get as many public votes as they should.

Agreed on what SPOTY has become.

I blame Dawson for QOS though. Sue, Ally and JP were brilliant together.

This shit show doesn't deserve a new thread each year but this years selection seems to have hit a new low.

I have nostalgia for the days when we were so shit at almost every sport that any one who actually achieved something was a shoe-in

Has to be Stokes although Mead has had a stellar year.

For me, revolutionising an approach to a sport and playing akey role in a WC win takes it. His documentary was great too even if not sport.

Fitzpatrick and McIlroy deserve mentions too.

Tom Pidcock. Olympic Mountain Bike Champion, World Cyclo cross champion and TdF stage winner. Head and shoulders above most of the nominees

This. Way too much winning. With cricket we were consistently shit for years. England's football teams are now consistently not shit and the men's team isn't even dislikeable anymore.

That descending masterclass he put on should seal it on its own

Congrats to Beth Mead, very well deserved.
