Cape Town - Government has announced an extension of the National State of Disaster to April 15, 2022.
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma made the announcement on Tuesday, which also marks two years since it was first declared in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
South Africa’s State of Disaster was set to expire today, however, under section 3 of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002) it can be extended by the minister by notice in the gazette for one month at a time before it lapses.
Dlamini-Zuma said in the Government Gazette that the extension takes into account, “the need to continue augmenting existing legislation and contingency arrangements undertaken by organs of the state to address the impact of the disaster”.
The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) met on Monday to discuss the regulations necessary to end the state of disaster.
The country remains in lockdown alert level 1, however, due to low infection rates there could be further relaxed restrictions which may include the scrapping of outdoor mask-wearing.
Health minister Joe Phaahla said earlier this month the Department of Health proposed an easing of a number of Covid-19 restrictions to the NCCC which will include reviewing regulations in travel, leisure and tourism.
The department’s spokesperson, Foster Mohale, said the current set of restrictions could soon be revised.
“The current situation allows for relaxed restrictions or regulations as part of efforts by government to open the economy. However, this doesn't replace vaccination because we continue to live with this deadly pandemic,” he said.

We expected the increase to 50% on Monday and got the above.
So no idea when this lot will change. It's in the hands of Zuma's ex Mrs.

They talk about a 5 wave. Omicron cost us dearly and the vaccination is still slow. Sport is a baby compare to Rhona.
I did wonder if the ANC are doing this to punish Rugby which is seen as the sport of the White minority but Soccer is also being treated the same way.OomStruisbaai wrote: Thu Mar 17, 2022 11:49 am We expected the increase to 50% on Monday and got the above.

Surely one solution would be for Rugby and Soccer put forward a joint plea for the crowd limits to be increased.
I don't think it's got anything to do with punishing white sports. There are some saying that the government is financially benefiting from the current state of emergency so it has an incentive to keep it in place. Perhaps they're getting a cut of all the PCR tests.

Agreed. Complete farce at this point.assfly wrote: Thu Mar 17, 2022 11:54 am It's an absolute farce. There is no justification for it. There are more people going to church and funerals than watching rugby in an outdoor stadium.
I can only hope the teams move to smaller venues to make more of an atmosphere of it.
Zuma hanging onto the state of disaster which is the source of all her power. One wonders to what extent it is to undermine Ramaphosa, but the longer they drag this out, the more it will hurt the ANC at the polls.
People are fed up.

If only there was any logic behind the rules. So you have a 10,000 seater and can take 2000 and then you have a 60,000 seater and still only 2000. They have all these outdoor limitations but then every taxi is packed to the brim like sardines, that is a lot more people exposure every day that having people in open stadiums. I think this extension of the state of emergency is because the small group of ministers who run the council love the power to much and are also to lazy to do what is necessary to go back to a normal set of rules while still be prepared for any possible outbreak.
Also read some article where someone suggested that the ANC is trying to use the cover of the State of Emergency to write a lot of the SOE laws into regular law so they can use these laws anytime they wants without having to declare SOE
Anyway I hope that they change the crowd sizes sooner than later. I will be at the Bulls/Scarlets game tonight, but yeah not quite the same with just 2000 people spread around in that stadium.
