Refereeing Over Time
I came across this delightful quote from the referee of the first match between England and Scotland on 27 March, 1871.
I reckon it applies just as well today. When an umpire is in doubt, I think he is justified in deciding against the side which makes most noise. They are probably in the wrong.
I am not talking about pro rugby - this was village grass roots club stuff.
Players from both sides definitely interacted with the crowd here and I bet they do there now too.
I drink and I forget things.
