Probably more Irish than half the players in the current squad. And the same for us.

Are you usually disappointed in the lack of Irish players in the Scotland squad?

All septics seem to have a backup nationality. Place I worked in Minnesota was full of wannabe Norwegians, Finns and Swedes.

Yes, a little bit of that up here, too. They will definitely list the ethnicities of grandparents, at least ... but NEVER if English/Protestant! :lolno:

It’s fascinating isn’t it - the US probably was last majority British descent (among white people) before the American Civil War? And yet still British ancestry is the ‘standard’ from which people deviate.

Germans were the largest immigrant group between 1840-80
In 1790 they were about 10% of the population

A lot of the Hessians who fought for the crown stayed on in America after the war interestingly.

Germans made a perhaps not unsurprising effort to minimise their ancestry in the early 20th century, though America always feels quite ‘German’ to me in strange ways which I guess is their influence

The Minnesotans don't really wave their Irish heritage either. I had one of those "you couldn't write it" moments in a house party where the music stopped at the exact moment when I said "sure a quarter of you are Irish" to a wannabe Norwegian.

There was a very awkward silence in the garden after that.

Nice people but there's a silent streak of prejudice with them. Witness the difficulties East Africans have had integrating there.

Irish Americans put more effort into Irish culture than most Irish born people, who usually adopt American culture.
