He seemed to be in trouble over the summer.

Ah no.

That’s awful . I had a suicide in the family this year.

All it leaves is questions .

I remember him terrorising the Allblacks in 1999.

Unfortunately, he's long been a troubled soul.

I wrote many years ago on PR-Jake that he'd spent time in a mental institution (Marseille I think) suffering from severe depression. Age fogs my memory but I think it was brought on by the death of his sister.

His life's ups and downs mirrored by his playing
- the NZ game
- then the showboating when he dropped the ball over the line v Ita

RIP entertainer.

I remember that only too well.

I was there at the game, forked out a crazy price for that ticket, to watch the ABs get dismantled by the French in the second half.

RIP.

Damn, I saw this all over Twitter today but hadn't realised it was suicide. Just goes to show that however mighty you may be or have been in your chosen field, mental health issues respect no boundaries.

What an absolute tragedy. I still remember watching that famous try in 1999 as a kid, it left such an impact on me and my love of the game.

Even worse to think it's suicide. Talk ffs. Just find someone to talk to.

His issues were long standing and the recent Beziers situation can't have helped but both were also very publicly known and so one would hope that there was a support network and it was aware i.e. this was
beyond anyone else preventing rather than contributed to by neglect.

As an aside, whilst pondering this last night, I think the mental health facility he was a former patient of was in Toulon and not Marseille as I posted earlier.

Love clips like this , magne with the pinch, clever kick, wicked bounce, Ballon ! Essaaiiiiii !

This & him blowing his lips after his fuckup v Italy are the 2 most memorable things I have of him. Good player and seemed to do well v England.
Quite sad that 2020 has thrown this up as well, he was a great player.

Dominci commented on both in an interview
Basically fessing up to it being remembered as much as that AB try. He goes on to say his wife is Italian and since France won 25-0, there seemed no need to make it 30 odd..... which ignores that France only led 13-0 at the time and were playing sh*t!!

I had no idea about him outside of a Rugby Pitch, I am ashamed to say, so am completely shocked by this news.

Yes. Wife and 2 daughters. Wife runs the wine promotion company Domi set up. Some news reports are saying police arrived to find his wife at the scene: she had gone looking for him. Christ!

One other bit of background (I had to trawl through old cuttings), he did go into depression after his sister's death which was way back in 1986 so he was only 14 at the time. Her death was a road accident: I could not recall if it was suicide (too). In his autobiography, he says he was on the verge of throwing himself under a bus.
