The gesture for Maradona was nice but left me feeling a little iffy.
There was nothing for Cristophe Dominici , a player who gave them kittens in 1999 and was directly involved in historical matches of the same sport with the AB's.
Maradona while undoubtedly a global icon and an incredible football player (the best ever according to most) has been on an Amy Winehouse esque path of destruction for 40 years. He refused to acknowledge the existence of his own son in Naples until 2004 when a court ruled it and has been on the bag ( even on the pitch and dugout) for a few decades.
I don't recall Meads, Hayden for instance getting any sort of a send off.
Added to the above (for which im sure ill get pilloried) the Allblack social media team had the Haka and gesture uploaded to twitter and youtube while the match was still in progress.
Self praise is no praise no? I feel they are farming for likes the whole time.
Allblacks social media charm offensive a bit needy?

As someone in the rag and bone trade I can tell you it meant a big deal to the Argies, so of course the ABs needed to acknowledge it.
It's a damn sight harder to acknowledge Dominici when you're not playing France and are more than 15,000km away.
Proximity dude.

Adds to this bit of neediness from earlier this week:

I’d worry about your own media charm offensive first.

its not the gesture ive the problem with as such, its the falling over themselves to say " look look aren't we great"ScarfaceClaw wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 12:30 pm I’d worry about your own media charm offensive first.

Pity their shirts aren't yellow then the impersonation of Minions would be complete.
Think it might have really pissed off the Argies to be given a Dominici AB rugby jersey.
No I think you are right my first reaction was cringe. Maradona had feck all to do with Rugby and was a mess of a human. 1 Min for Dominici would have been better IMO
Sums it up.Jimmy Smallsteps wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 12:09 pm As someone in the rag and bone trade I can tell you it meant a big deal to the Argies, so of course the ABs needed to acknowledge it.

With the Black Craps having 'taken the knee' the night before, that made it two nights in a row for NZ sports teams.Steve wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 12:00 pm The gesture for Maradona was nice but left me feeling a little iffy.

All seems a bit OTT and cringe-worthy to me, but it's their choice.

I wasn’t fully comfortable with the Maradona offering. Felt far more forced than NZ Maori honouring Anthony Foley and of course unrelated to rugby.

A pretty pointless article - most people acknowledged in their obituaries that Maradona was a great footballer but a less than perfect human being.Steve wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 10:26 pm https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... es-abusers

Moreover its not as if the particular off pitch discretion was particularly significant to the story of his life unlike say, Mike Tyson raping Desiree Washington or OJ Simpson murdering his wife.

In the first test between the two teams Matera rightly spoke to the ref about his team not being respected by the All Blacks. It was a fair call and should have sent a wider wake up call to the team and coaches, along with a fair slice of the fans who consistently show none for opposing teams, Steve.
In the build up to this game Argentina lost its greatest sporting hero and national icon. Presenting a jersey with his number on it was a simple mark of respect and a simple touch with no fanfare that would have been massively appreciated by the Argentinians, team and fans alike.
Stomping around shitting on the gesture after the event is the mark of a small mind. A petty mind. A shitty attitude that displays no grace, no appreciation, no respect.
Wind your fucking neck in.

Kirwan was on about Matera pulling the Aussie hookers hair in a scrap last week on the breakdown on Sky .
He reckoned Matera was a hypocrite. Starting loads of agro and then asking for respect.
I didnt write the article either chief.
I have no issue with the gesture. I have issue with the social media team being so quick to go fishing for kudos. Read the thread title. You're jumping in front of bullets im not firing.Shanky’s mate wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 10:43 pmSteve wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 10:26 pm https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... es-abusers
