Richmond was a clusterfuck. Harding and Highflats have long been a hotbed of faction fighting. But after 94 the N3 corridor became a real problem. Lots of money concentrated along the route. Wealthy-ish, relatively, municipalities, lucrative taxi routes. Plenty of room for graft and extortion. ANC councillors in Estcourt, Mooi River, Ladysmith regularly get offed by their political rivals.Rinkals wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 9:18 amNot sure I would classify the Midlands as being the most violent.FalseBayFC wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 9:01 amThe KZN midlands has a long history of hardcore warlords. I agree with you on that. I have always wondered why there are near constant truck burnings in Mooi River. It seems as though the Zulu ethnic mobilisation started with these truck drivers who believe their jobs have been stolen by foreigners. Zuma knows how to tap into this tension - this is precisely what he wanted
I'd say that Richmond (where my cousin farms) beats it hands down.
And then there's Harding and Highflats.
My Dad farmed in Umzumbe and he had a little breeze block operation during the wars in the eighties and we were delivering a lorry load to the one guy whose house had been burned down in a raid. The burned out buildings seemed ok, so I asked the guy why he didn't simply replace the roof and he explained that he had to build a new structure because, if he simply repaired the house, they would take it as an insult and come back to fimish the job.
I don't think a lot of whites realised what was going on during those wars.

It looks more to me like the looter walking from the right was going to beat the box (I thought it was a person at first but zoomed in, looks like a till or something you’d try to whack open), and accidentally forgot about gravity and got 30ft of karma.
That photo caption is a tad biased , ‘resident fleeing from police’ - it should say ‘looter nicking a freezer fleeing from police’Chilli wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 9:40 am https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article ... d-looting/
A very good read and will explain a lot.
Surely in the aftermath some cops will make a few token raids to try an find someone in a shithole will a brand new Miele washing machine or huge telly and ask them for proof of purchase ? Or even someone wearing designer clothes ? Would Putting a few scumbags in prison act as a deterrent to future looting ?

OK - best of luck to all of you in the affected areas. I am lucky enough to be in Cape Town but my extended family are in Howick, Mooi River, Hluhluwe, Durban, East Griqualand and the South Coast. I am switching off all social media and news for a couple of days. I've hit mental overload level.

It's not really a Zulu stronghold, so I wouldn't normally expect Zuma to have much support.
This morning I phoned a client who went up to Durban a few years ago to set up a branch.
He married there , had a baby jut recently. He was sobbing when I phoned him.
Now I always knew this bloke as a hard negotiater, Tough Cape boytjie...not the moffie types we usually get here.
He was exhausted and almost broken. He was up the whole night blockading the road with the community .
Keeping protesters out of the hood....shooting at the crowd. etc......all he wanted was to get his wife and child back to Cape Town.
Looking for safe routes to the airport.............I felt so humbled and sad after that call

I have no idea. But I think this is a lot more about opportunism than genuine support for Zuma.Rinkals wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 10:52 am Aren't Edward and Duduzane closely associated with some of the Capetown gangs?

That's why I'm asking the question.
Seriously, Nipper you are behaving like a prick.
There were photographs in the daily Maverick some time ago with one of them consorting with, is it Modak? as I say, I'm not up on who is what in Capetown gangland.
Capetown isn't (as far as I know) Zulu territory, so I'm trying to get a handle on why they would want to riot in support of Zuma.
Especially since most of the other Provinces have made a point of not getting involved.
I am in Killarney gardens. Sent my staff home. Everyone is locking up their premises and going home too.assfly wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 11:01 amI have no idea. What have I done? You are the one tossing around these theories without substance. Don't you think this could just be opportunistic thugs looking to join the party? As Falsebay said earlier - this is not a protest. It has become a free for all

Air pistol that shoots pellets. And pelle5t gun. Difference is I use a special pellet with a sharp point. Penetrates the skin and disintegrates. Causes a mess but none lethalChilli wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 11:15 am When I left SA for Zambia and the UK I handed in my 9mm pistol to SAPS to be destroyed. At the time it was the right thing to do. My friend used to have a very powerful paintball gun that he used on more than one occasion. Once it took out the back windscreen of a car that was used by some guys trying to climb over his gate.

My buurman arrived back (to Newcastle) from Durban today. He said that Durban was crazy, and has had serious problems trying to refuel his bakkie in Newcastle after the journey. His advice for anyone in KZN is to stay inside and prepare your firearms.
The report of a crowd collecting at Makro turned out to be false news. Someone had posted a picture dated to 2017.
Very annoying. But us business owners could not risk our staff. Getting out of Killarney gardens is a nightmare at the best of times. Most of the businesses locked up and sent staff home for safety.
Which brought us to the next conversation at home.
My wife has been asking me to show her how to use the guns.
This resulted in me finally conceding tonight and showing her and my 13 year old how to handle and take apart and load the gun. At first it was fun for my 13 year old until it came to the business end. Where and how to shoot. I told him straight for the face. With the shattering air gun pellets it will not penetrate the skull but will do serious damage to the eyes etc. Enough to stop any attacker. Mind you anywhere on the body will be very painful. At this point he got all teary. It was the thought of hurting another human being. I understand some might feel that it is maybe too young to educate him, but if I am not there he is the man of the house. He is my last option to protect my family. Of course this can apply to any situation like a house break in or whatever. Our top floor is sealed by a sturdy gate on the stairs with a very strong lock. And padlock. Without a grinder you are not getting in. This is our safe space and we went through the procedure in getting there and securing the gate.
It is very sad that we have to steal our children's innocence with this nonsense but there really is no alternative. After living my mates drama this morning and feeling his anguish in protecting his family I woke up to reality

People had gates at the top of their stairs in the 90s. It’s not a new thing that your kids alone have experienced.Sards wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 8:05 pm The report of a crowd collecting at Makro turned out to be false news. Someone had posted a picture dated to 2017.

Bad things happening in toti guys :(
Lots of people killed at a roadblock they tried to pass through whilst claiming they just wanted food - but the tellies in the cars gave the game away. FiL has barricaded himself in the house, not much else they can do right now. No army around, just a few cops, local security and citizen militia on the ground.

My old man taught me to shoot a pistol and .22 at 11 and at 13 our scout troop went to a rifle range to shoot R4’s.
