I agree with you on that. I have always wondered why there are near constant truck burnings in Mooi River. It seems as though the Zulu ethnic mobilisation started with these truck drivers who believe their jobs have been stolen by foreigners. The KZN midlands has a long history of hardcore warlords. Zuma's rise to power stemmed from his influence over them. This is Zululand and its always been the most violent part of the country.

Not sure I would classify the Midlands as being the most violent.

I'd say that Richmond (where my cousin farms) beats it hands down.

And then there's Harding and Highflats.

My Dad farmed in Umzumbe and he had a little breeze block operation during the wars in the eighties and we were delivering a lorry load to the one guy whose house had been burned down in a raid. The burned out buildings seemed ok, so I asked the guy why he didn't simply replace the roof and he explained that he had to build a new structure because, if he simply repaired the house, they would take it as an insult and come back to fimish the job.

I don't think a lot of whites realised what was going on during those wars.

Richmond was a clusterfuck. Harding and Highflats have long been a hotbed of faction fighting. But after 94 the N3 corridor became a real problem. Lots of money concentrated along the route. Wealthy-ish, relatively, municipalities, lucrative taxi routes. Plenty of room for graft and extortion. ANC councillors in Estcourt, Mooi River, Ladysmith regularly get offed by their political rivals.

Surely in the aftermath some cops will make a few token raids to try an find someone in a shithole will a brand new Miele washing machine or huge telly and ask them for proof of purchase ? This morning I phoned a client who went up to Durban a few years ago to set up a branch.
He married there , had a baby jut recently. He was sobbing when I phoned him.
Now I always knew this bloke as a hard negotiater, Tough Cape boytjie...not the moffie types we usually get here.
He was exhausted and almost broken. He was up the whole night blockading the road with the community .
Keeping protesters out of the hood....shooting at the crowd. etc......all he wanted was to get his wife and child back to Cape Town.
Looking for safe routes to the airport.............I felt so humbled and sad after that call

My friend used to have a very powerful paintball gun that he used on more than one occasion. Once it took out the back windscreen of a car that was used by some guys trying to climb over his gate.

My wife has been asking me to show her how to use the guns.
This resulted in me finally conceding tonight and showing her and my 13 year old how to handle and take apart and load the gun. At first it was fun for my 13 year old until it came to the business end. Where and how to shoot. I told him straight for the face. With the shattering air gun pellets it will not penetrate the skull but will do serious damage to the eyes etc. Enough to stop any attacker. Mind you anywhere on the body will be very painful. At this point he got all teary. It was the thought of hurting another human being. I understand some might feel that it is maybe too young to educate him, but if I am not there he is the man of the house. He is my last option to protect my family. Of course this can apply to any situation like a house break in or whatever. Our top floor is sealed by a sturdy gate on the stairs with a very strong lock. And padlock. Without a grinder you are not getting in. This is our safe space and we went through the procedure in getting there and securing the gate.
It is very sad that we have to steal our children's innocence with this nonsense but there really is no alternative. After living my mates drama this morning and feeling his anguish in protecting his family I woke up to reality

13 isn’t too young ffs. If he is taught well and can handle a firearm responsibility, 13 is fine.

My old man taught me to shoot a pistol and .22 at 11 and at 13 our scout troop went to a rifle range to shoot R4’s.
