About 4 years ago we had them in our house coming via the sewerage pipes... had specialists in with cameras... looked down pipes... we ended up with fitting a one way flap to stop the rats getting into our sewerage system... noisy buggers... in the walls and ceiling... thankfully nothing since the flap was fitted...Ymx wrote: Sun Sep 26, 2021 8:32 am Screw the fuel shortage.

Many, many, moons ago I was in a house share; & despite being nominally the show house for the Estate, it was a shockingly bodged build.sorCrer wrote: Sun Sep 26, 2021 6:17 pmBidet![]()

Do your turds always have enough oomph to push the trap door open?
The panic buyers caused the shortage. As someone said here I believe, the only sensible thing to do when there is a panic, is to unfortunately join them if you do actually need the resource.I like neeps wrote: Sun Sep 26, 2021 9:31 pm I at first thought the panic buyers are stupid but apparently 2/3s of stations are out and now the govt are suspending competition laws to help. Seems to be if you didn't panic you'll be running out of petrol soon.

Someone in Government needs to get a fucking grip; & (a) acknowledge there's a problem, & the (b) put temporary measures in place to stop the shortages, & then finally (c) fix the underlying causes.Raggs wrote: Sun Sep 26, 2021 9:34 pmThe panic buyers caused the shortage. They have acknowledged there's a problem, they've changed the competition laws and are getting the army involved in delivering petrol. Under plans devised for a no deal Brexit funnily enough.fishfoodie wrote: Sun Sep 26, 2021 9:44 pmSomeone in Government needs to get a fucking grip; & (a) acknowledge there's a problem, & the (b) put temporary measures in place to stop the shortages, & then finally (c) fix the underlying causes.Raggs wrote: Sun Sep 26, 2021 9:34 pmThe panic buyers caused the shortage. (a) Should be prioritizing essential customers; & rationing for everyone else.
(b) Is getting enough drivers for fuel deliveries, to get the stocks back up in the petrol stations
& (c) is obviously issuing say 20,000 free, one year visas to HGV license holders.
There's about a 5% chance of this happening; so actually you're fucked !
I can't imagine a 3-month visa helping too much to encourage them either. Where are they going to live? It will be letters of marque and press gangs roaming the streets of Zeebrugge Rotterdam and other major European ports.robmatic wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:13 amI can't imagine a 3-month visa helping too much to encourage them either. Can you post it?Paddington Bear wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:38 am Incidentally, my car catastrophically failed it's MOT a month or so ago and I've been sulkily refusing to pay out to fix it since, having filled up a full tank on the way to said MOT. So there's a full tank of diesel available to a good home - pick up only.
It's the old bank run conundrum - it's irrational to start one but rational to join one.tc27 wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:45 am We are lucky in so far as we can walk to everywhere we need to go (I WFH or get the train) so even though down to a quarter in both cars we are going to let this settle down.
I remember in the context of the 2008 MBS crisis Warren Buffett talking about how infectious fear and panic can be - definitely get that impression and even felt the urge to fill up myself even though I don't need it. Also accept for some people buying at the first sign of a shortage is actually rational.
You seen the backlog for HGV driving tests and HGV licence applications at the DVLA too?Paddington Bear wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:00 am Visa changes are window dressing, most of these Eastern European workers aren't coming back regardless given the increase in living standards in their home countries and the terrible working conditions in the UK.
The problem with that, is how do you explain to your existing drivers; paying foreign drivers more that them ?Paddington Bear wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:15 amAs ever, depends a lot on how much they're being paid.robmatic wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:13 amI can't imagine a 3-month visa helping too much to encourage them either. I read an article the other day saying that the government had side-lined/dismissed the so-called Nudge Unit they had been taking advice from on the subject of behavioural change during the pandemic.Kawazaki wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 7:39 am I think people who blame the government for people being morons is also moronic.
Let's hope the initial panic dies down rather like the Great Bog Roll Shortage of 2020 as people gradually realize they have enough for their needs while service stations start a re-up this week. Doesn't help when this sort of behaviour happens thoughPanic Buying -. we are a small haulage company of 10 HGV's. Last night I was out until the early hours delivering fuel to 3 of our HGV's that had run out. The fuel I delivered them had to be siphoned out of what HGV's had made it back to our depot. I delivered them enough fuel to make their deliveries and return back to our depot.
To those people who have bought into this media hype - there is no fuel shortage - there is a HGV driver shortage. If you all carry on buying fuel/ food as normal, there is enough.
The irony is beyond me - you panic buying is slowing down and stopping HGV's from making their deliveries. At this rate, unless the fuel situation improves, we can only send out 5 of our 10 HGV's Monday morning - obviously meaning we will be delivering 50% of what we are capable of - by Tuesday, we may have 7 off the road and so on.
What I'm trying to say is STOP PANIC BUYING - your actions are the reason we are in this situation.

My mate finished and headed to the paying in desk and looked at the next pump total cost for fuel £3.78.

To be fair, given that we're visibly screwed without a certain number of them and not enough folk want to do it, pay and conditions are going to have to be better.fishfoodie wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 10:05 amThe problem with that, is how do you explain to your existing drivers; paying foreign drivers more that them ?Paddington Bear wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:15 amAs ever, depends a lot on how much they're being paid.robmatic wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:13 am

They'll justifiably demand the same pay; & then when the visas expire; that pay rise will be the new base pay.
And we may just have to learn to pay more realistic prices for goods and services - easy to say but not so if you're on a low income of course. Definitely feels like the boom times are over for the foreseeablerobmatic wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 10:45 amTo be fair, given that we're visibly screwed without a certain number of them and not enough folk want to do it, pay and conditions are going to have to be better.fishfoodie wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 10:05 amThe problem with that, is how do you explain to your existing drivers; paying foreign drivers more that them ?Paddington Bear wrote: Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:15 am

Pay might be better, but conditions are set to be worse with the Govt (crazily) suggesting that drivers can work longer hours to meet demand!
