It was a Scottish folk music chat room, a bit niche, I'll grant you.
Gateway was my first desktop probably a little before 1995. The monitor was enormous!!!Tichtheid wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 1:19 pmInsane_Homer wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 7:34 amThat one is only £1899mat the expat wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 3:35 am For a machine that will likely be used for Browsing the net...![]()
Because I'm having my lunch I thought I'd look up a couple of things, my first Gateway desktop, crt monitor and printer cost around £1400 in 1995, which is around £2750 now.
It had a 125k dial up modem, 1.6MB hard drive and 16k memory installed, running Windows 95.
I had my online number as one of my "friends and family" numbers with BT, that meant I could dial up at the weekend for a pound a minute and download Usenet groups and the Open University stuff for the course I was doing.
You had to spend a lot of time in a Group chat on the phone to Gateway's call centre in Dublin where the techs would go around in a circle and sort out everyone's problems one by one, they were very good these techs.
The active speakers that came with the Gateway were really good, they lasted until a few years ago and paired with a decent sub they had a HUGE sound.
I guess my point is that my Gateway desktop was very much entry level, but cost around about what the premium models do now

I thought the tech support was ok until one of the bright sparks suggested the best way to resolve my problem was to wipe the hard drive and start all over again!!!!
The packaging everythi came in was pretty cool

Shmoooing English support team.
(I was in French support team for 18 month).
See, you hear this all the time but people generally buy machines ovrer-specced for their needs.Tichtheid wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 7:46 am
The kids all have Macbook pros, but they are heavy-duty users studying art or doing post-grad stuff, so there is some justification for them
otoh, aren't similarly-spec (and finished) Windows machines in the same ballpark price-wise?
A Shmoo was exactly the action you describe. The guys who did this were despised and almost impossible to catch.SaintK wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 3:38 pmlaurent wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 3:00 pmARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHSaintK wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 2:41 pm

I hate to go all Godwin; but you have to ask how much he would have to be offered to be the face of Pol Pots Cambodia, or Hitlers Germany ?
How much money is enough Becks ?

Well if he’d been in the England football team in 1938, I expect he would have done the same as his team mates.fishfoodie wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 4:22 pm David "Golden Balls" Beckham, is getting £150M, from Qatar, to be the face of 2022 World Cup and 'promote tourism and culture' in the country .

They were a large customer of mine in Dublin back in the '90s. Their reception was full of chairs in Friesian cow leather - very strange looking.SaintK wrote: Wed Oct 20, 2021 2:41 pmGateway was my first desktop probably a little before 1995. The engine driver did not open the doors because he was worried about people hurting themselves in the rush to escape the train, so instead, passengers had to climb out the windows. Good call, mate.
