Daniel Suarez also flying the flag for Mexico in Nascar, he's only the 5th driver not born in the USA to win a race in the cup series along with Mario Andretti and Juan Pablo Montoya (can't remember the other two)Insane_Homer wrote: Mon May 30, 2022 6:03 am
Great win for Cheko, Pato O'ward nearly made it a Mexican double in the Indy 500, pipped by former F1 driver, swede, Marcus Ericsson.
Always thought Nelson Piquet was an arse! Also Verstappens future father in law!
Formula 1 has condemned three-time world champion Nelson Piquet for using racially abusive language about Lewis Hamilton.
The 69-year-old Brazilian, who won the world title in 1981, 1983 and 1987, used a racially offensive term in referring to Hamilton on a podcast.
An F1 statement said: "Discriminatory or racist language is unacceptable in any form and has no part in society.
"Lewis is an incredible ambassador for our sport and deserves respect."
It added: "His tireless efforts to increase diversity and inclusion are a lesson to many and something we are committed to at F1."
Piquet was discussing the accident between Hamilton and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen on the first lap of last year's British Grand Prix..
It was an interview in Brazil and so in Portuguese, but it’s being reported that the word he used to describe Hamilton is the Portuguese equivalent of N****r.
Piquet was interviewed by Motorsport Talk’s Ricardo Oliveira in Portuguese last November. The video of the interview was recently picked up by Brazilian media including CNN. Piquet was discussing Hamilton’s clash with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix in 2021. He described the incident as "a joke", and said Hamilton had been "lucky" only Verstappen crashed. He then used the racist epithet in expressing his opinion that Hamilton had made a mistake.
The Brazilian driver has a record of issuing unpleasant comments, including, while he was driving, calling Ayrton Senna ‘the Sao Paulo taxi driver’ and accusing him of being gay. He also referred to Nigel Mansell’s wife as “ugly”. Last year Piquet drove as a chauffeur to Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, at the country’s Independence Day.

Unfortunate that his girlfriend liked a post defending the racist comment.. the defence being that their gran used the term all the time...Calculon wrote: Tue Jun 28, 2022 5:08 pm Is that fair? Not to defend Piquet but I know there are terms used in Latin America toward dark skinned people that are not intended to be derogatory. They are of course racist but the user does not intend it as a racial slur, its just what has been considered socially acceptable within that culture.
But why use any term? He knows who Lewis is...why use something referencing his skin colour as opposed to his name?Hugo wrote: Tue Jun 28, 2022 5:31 pmWhat was the actual word used? I don't know why he would use that term. It might have been a dogwhistle type of thing but maybe its commonplace and not frowned upon in Brazil? Its hard to gauge intent.Grandpa wrote: Tue Jun 28, 2022 5:35 pmBut why use any term? Tbh he's 70 years old and spent his formative years living in a right wing military dictatorship in a country with a very dark colonial past - Brazil was one of the last nations in the Americas to end the practice of slavery (1880s) and I think it imported more African slaves than anyone else.
His comments are probably a reflection of growing up in thst society and the pervasive problems of racism in F1 that Hamilton has flagged many times over.

Nissany

Car vaulted over the tyre barrier which will be a worry.
Thought that accident was Russell's fault but will probably be treated as a racing incident.
Bad luck for Zhou, he's been driving well recently.
There were protestors on the track but the Red Flag put paid to them and they have been removed and arrested.
I do wonder if Just Stop Oil are secretly funded by BP/Shell/Exxon etc as the only thing they seem to do is make the environmental movement look silly.

Amazing that in one day the halo has saved two drivers, and that Zhou has no fractures (although TV coverage has just suggested thats not completely confirmed)
Picture of Zhou trapped in his car wedged between the fence and barrier.mos_eisely_ wrote: Sun Jul 03, 2022 2:50 pmZhou was saying before the race he was really excited as its the first race his parents have been able to come toia801310 wrote: Sun Jul 03, 2022 2:36 pm Car vaulted over the tyre barrier which will be a worry.

He used up 8 of his 9 lives today !
The Halo saved him when he was sliding along the ground & thru the gravel, but it was gone when he was flung into the catch fencing, so he was so lucky he wasn't decapitated by the armco when the car fell into that gap

Yeah, I just looked at the crash again, & I though it was gone, it was hard to see with the dust, & colour scheme, but in freeze frame its still in place. Incredible engineering !Kawazaki wrote: Sun Jul 03, 2022 5:41 pmfishfoodie wrote: Sun Jul 03, 2022 5:17 pm He used up 8 of his 9 lives today !

I don’t think Ferrari had a lot of choice in how they played it. The Safety Car came just a little bit too late to help LeClerc, they couldn’t do much about that. Perhaps they could have ordered Sainz to let him past in that first stint but we saw soon after that that he didn’t have the pace to get away once he had clear air.sturginho wrote: Mon Jul 04, 2022 9:02 amAs a ferrari fan it was a disaster, whoever is in charge of strategy needs to be taken out and shotassfly wrote: Mon Jul 04, 2022 8:21 am That was one of the most entertaining races I've seen in a long time. The first start was a worry for them though. That was a disaster.
Before the Safety Car, Hamilton was chasing both Ferraris down on fresher tyres; he also appeared to be getting more out of the hard tyres than them.Guy Smiley wrote: Mon Jul 04, 2022 10:01 amI don’t think Ferrari had a lot of choice in how they played it. The Safety Car was a disaster for LeClerc, but was the reason Sainz won. Without it they might have finished 2 and 3, rather than 1 and 4.
The main beneficiary of the SC was Perez, who was miles behind until that point.

I work with a 40 year old Brazilian. He said there's no excuse for using such a term, no acceptable alternate translation, that he knew what he was saying was inflammatory and that he has form. He's not well respected in Brazil. Talking ill of Senna over the years will get the public against you for sure.Hugo wrote: Tue Jun 28, 2022 6:45 pmYeah, I've just been reading his wiki page.Grandpa wrote: Tue Jun 28, 2022 6:14 pmExcept Nelson has history when it comes to controversial comments. He doesn't look happy does he?!
Fair play on him though, he's made a huge fortune, won four WDCs and got out with mostly a positive reputation*.
* I have to admit that I didn't like the version of Vettel when he was winning his championships. Taking out Webber and then blaming him for the collision, Multi-21 etc were elite shithousery.

ust finished watching a replay of the Hungaroring race...
Ferrari... just what the hell?
Pull off a masterful overcut for LeClerc to pass Sainz and gain the lead, showing good pace and with the field all looking like one more tyre stop at least with coldish conditions giving the mediums the best times and the one guy on hards going backwards....
so they pit Charles for hards and he goes backwards.
Jesus.
