Unfortunately this undermines your argument a little bit. Qualifying and other ODIs aren't the world cup, which is a high pressure "neutral" tournament over a long period of time where plenty of teams raise their game. England won the last three odi series, losing 5 out of 14 since the last World Cup.

We were able to send a second team to beat Ireland before the world cup. You just can't replicate the world cup setup in any meaningful way.

Be honest: before this tournament started do you think you would have believed England wouldn't have walked qualification? There's a fair bit of 20:20 hindsight going on here.

Qualification games are a lot more like regular ODIs than they are like a world cup tournament for a host of fairly obvious reasons.

Yes? West Indies have been in a death spiral for ages and they had huge problems with player availability and retention. In 2018 they'd managed to win just 26% of their ODIs following on from the 2015 tournament (compared to 66% for England or India - only Sri Lanka was worse than 45%). They're fucking dreadful.

Ireland went backwards at a rate of knots after the last World Cup. The only surprise in qualifiers was the loss to Oman.

If Pakistan had managed to bat the full 50 and get it to maybe 290, it'd be a bigger challenge, but I think SA would still have it. Let's see.

Stokes coming back has been a problem. He hasn't been fit enough to feature in most of the matches and he caused a late rethink of the squad.

I don't think the entire squad going into meltdown has anything to do with what I'm saying about England being the opposite of a one man team for the past eight years but hey
