I'd say there's greater visibility of the same amount of stupidity or ignorance.

Possibly, but we now have 'fake news' and 'fake facts' or 'alternative facts'. Then there is the whole phenomenon of 'gotcha' journalism which trickles down into gotcha dialogue, deplatforming and pile-ons. It's happened in versions of this place for years - the Irish are the worst of course but there are other groups, be they Quins fans, Kiwis or Welsh etc who slavishly follow each other from thread to thread to ambush, abuse and expunge any perceived critics.

I called this years ago. We always assumed there were 3.5 billion morons out there - the Interweb confirmed it.

My theory is the wealthy (who control the right wing media and the narrative, and lots of peoples thinking)of course have nothing but nastiness now.
It was always going to be this way.

Before, in the good ole days it was all about civility, trickle down economic theory, work hard, get qualifications do the right thing and we will welcome you onto the ladder of equality.

That was discovered to all be bullshit so now it is all "fuck off and die loser cunt scrounger" etc.

It is nasty because it has to be. There is nothing else left but nastiness..
Peoples wealth is at stake and they don't want to pay or do anything about the inequality in society.
Their wealth depends on lots of people having fuck all. They know it, know there is no moral justification for it. Most wealth is inherited.

So they would much rather be a cunt, get the hate narrative going and have a taxcut.

So we are all at the fag end of Economic Liberalism, where the tactic now is to scream "Communist" at you.
So of course it is seriously fucking nasty.
Before long we will have people disappearing after taking a helicopter ride.

Deleted Facebook a number of years ago and stay away from twatter and all the other stuff like that.

What we have done is basically given the kids who were the clever, but there was something weird about them, software geeks at Uni freedom freedom as they "cough" grow up, to shape the thinking of millions of adults across the globe. All driven by establishing outrage and anger to maximise the clicks and hence revenue.
As a scientific test have a look on Youtube and look up something like an amzing piece of classical music performed by a world renowned orchestra. Look at the likes and dislikes. However many likes there are there will be between 5%-10% dislikes as a ratio to the likes. Who on earth would search to find something like that then click to dislike it? That's an extreme case but you see it across the board. They don't give a sh1t about anything but just want our clicks.

You really think this is a right and left thing?

Feels like an authoritarian/authoritarian arms race to me.

My take is that People have realised that social media can give a disproportionate voice to anyone that wants it- even l the previously disenfranchised.

This gives power to anyone that is really intent on exploring/exploiting this opportunity social media gives to influence.

Instead of using said power for the common good, they’re using it to aggrandise themselves and their own little section of society.

It’s fucking animal farm mate, but the farmers are still in the picture and so there’s a pitched battle for control of the narrative.

Suppose you could argue the Jordan Peterson stuff about the SJWs actually being a wing of neomarxism, but it always feels a bit theoretical to me.

One thing I’m certain of though, is that the right wing ain’t in control the way you say they are.

Yup, that was one of the main points in the Netflix doc social dilemma. Social media has a business model that is fuelled by outrage and anger. Now, news media has always gone for scandals and controversy because it "sold newspapers" but what we see now is that to the power of ten.

I’ll check out the Netflix doc, as haven’t watched it yet.

But it strikes me that thinking the nerds have orchestrated an angry culture feels a bit off (I know I’m paraphrasing, so please feel free to correct me if I’ve misunderstood - I am on the way to being dewet, so I wouldn’t be surprised!)

Humans can be arseholes in order to get to a point where they feel in control.

Social media is like a much larger and overt manifestation on what happens in any tribal system - any human with power has the chance to be a cunt, groups of humans even more so.

It’s depressingly unsurprising how many choose to take that option.

I think the position of the makers of the documentary (and the dozen or so silicon valley alumni they interview) is not that they have orchestrated an angry culture as much as they have figured out how to profit from it.

Most of the people on the doc left silicon valley because they became disenchanted with the lack of ethics in the likes of google, twitter and felt that were complicit in facilitating the erosion of the social fabric of society.

I think it has also allowed perfect to triumph over good, per the phrase perfect being the enemy of good. The second anyone says anything a horde immediately starts searching for something they said or did decades ago, often when they were a completely different person, and then this is used as PROOF that we should ignore whatever it is that's being said now.

One of the issues with the internet is the social consequences of being a cunt are generally much lower - you're unlikely to get punched in the face for running your mouth off online.
