Or is it? I've been dealing with my MP and I received an email from her office that began "Dear GogLais (if I may)". I realise that many women especially understandably don't like being addressed as "My dear" but Dear at the start of a letter is something totally different. I've sent plenty of Dear Suchabody letters to people that I could have cheerfully strangled, mostly construction project managers as it happens.
It's just struck me now that maybe she thought I expected to be addressed as Dear Sir. It's a minefield for those of a certain age.

Was it your first name? It may well have been that, presuming that she can use your first name rather than refer to you as Mr. Lais.
