Giant container ship emblazoned with "Evergreen". You couldn't make it up.
Would you rather it was being flown or carried by truck?Torquemada 1420 wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 8:42 am Giant container ship emblazoned with "Evergreen". You couldn't make it up.

I'd prefer unnecessary stuff not to be transported at all e.g. asparagus from Peru and refugees from Iran. You know, better than anyone here, that that comment is overly simplistic. Using a weight per distance is always going to result in being more efficient than planes (see end of budget flying thread) or truck........ but maybe not rail. Maybe passenger per miles per rate of speed would make the space shuttle the safest form of travel?
It doesn't alter the fact that the size of global shipping means the aggregate pollution is huge. And planes & trucks don't result in other pollutions e.g. marine sound, bilge........
So, I think the point is fair. Whether shipping is less polluting than other methods just makes it potentially a lesser of evils but does not make it green!
BTW Hi and hope you and the boss and tribe are all well.

The person who steered that ship had one job to do - parallel park it.
I bet she's feeling bad about the incident.

Layman's questions
1) Why no ground base winching? Bring in, anchor them and pull?
2) Skycrane the load off to lighten the ship? Or are freight containers too heavy for that?

I guess they'd need a very well dug in anchor to winch off 200,000 tonnes - even using a series of pulleys. And that's assuming they could pull from an angle that would work. Surely it can't just be that bulbous nose that's causing the problem though, it must be beached under the beam as well isn't it?

Ships are not designed for those kind of stresses. Good chance it'll rupture of you try to haul it like that.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 2:25 pm Layman's questions

The thing is the same length as the empire state building. Would take too long to get the load off but they might have to do it if the wee digger can't do the job.

Do we know if the ship slewing was due to some sort of mechanical malfunction, or simple human fuck up?Glibtor wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 4:00 pm The person who steered that ship had one job to do - parallel park it.

With that combination, there'd better not be any exposed flames in the area.Saint wrote: Can they not just drop a load of laxative in the canal? Should sort it out in 12 hours

I'm not sure her parallel parking abilities are entirely to blame.
(emphasis to point out Glibtor's subtle sexist joke, which may have been missed by some)
The issue is the required foundations for any land based winch system, just not possible in short term and sourcing those winches would be tricky.Uncle fester wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:03 pmShips are not designed for those kind of stresses. The vessel will have adequate strength for towing off, I don’t see any structural concerns even if the bow is no longer water tight.
Basically, more tugs are needed once the bow section is cleared but it is likely aground too so they will be looking at how to lighten the load.
Salvage companies will be making a killing.
They're going to try on Monday as it's a spring tide, all, of 2 metres of it... Be 8.4 metres for us locally...
I love watching little children running and screaming, playing hide and seek in the playground.

Do wonder if this will result in a size restriction henceforth.
I assume boats of that size don't have bow thrusters?

It might not take too long to lighten the load if they've got the right equipment, but the right equipment could easily be in another part of the world and just getting it there could be the slow part.Uncle fester wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:03 pmShips are not designed for those kind of stresses. Actually, poor picture and the hull markings are not clear so it might be just the one bow tunnel thruster and the bulbous bow.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Fri Mar 26, 2021 9:23 amWhere? Also, the Pilot will take no accountability whatsoever, the Master is still in charge of the vessel and its safe navigation. He/she might be looking for new employment once it is anchored off Port Said and surveyors attend.shaggy wrote: Fri Mar 26, 2021 10:09 amActually, poor picture and the hull markings are not clear so it might be just the one bow tunnel thruster and the bulbous bow.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Fri Mar 26, 2021 9:23 amWhere? What would the difference be in journey time from say Gibraltar to Mumbai going around the Cape compared to going via Suez?
I just wondered when the ships started using that route.
