I am watching Portrait Artist of the year and the sitter is Eddie Izzard, they are using the pronoun her to describe the sitter. If you are a cross dresser ( as I believe EI is) do you refer to them as her in a dress and him when not? I kind of thought a cross dresser was a bloke that enjoyed dressing as a woman (basically like 80% of Royal Marines) as opposed to a transsexual who actually identifies as a woman (if biologically male)

Suppose it’s dictated by the person being described.

In my former life, one's sexuality was indicated on a birth certificate.

No, it wasn’t. No one was ever labelled ‘gay’ or ‘hetero’ on a birth certificate. You are trying to refer to gender.

Sex, very few mentions of gender on a birth certificate I'd have thought

And whilst Eddie once might have been thought a man who liked dressing as a woman it's quite likely her thinking on this has changed as society has also come to consider the matter and be more flexible in its thinking. So far as I know Eddie is now a lesbian in a man's body, though that's based on a comedy routine by Eddie rather than any actual knowledge

I fully support his/her wish to be anything he/she wants, however it is quite anomalous when you see someone in a dress and makeup who essentially looks like a navvie.

After he died on his arse on stage at some Labour/Corbyn love in picnic where the few who bothered to turn up pretty much ignored him and his swearing routines, the best he can hope for is “used to be relevant”.

Rather poor choice of venue for a comedian. You'd think he'd pick a crowd who knew how to laugh.

Awful programme. Judges are typical, contrary loveees and select winners based on pseudo criteria that only they, as experts, could appreciate.

Would be fine if we just had the artists and no judges.

Late entry to the 'dumbest post of the year' category in the end of year awards, in a year where the bar is very high indeed.

Watch out for a late rush of idiocy from bimbot to try and secure his position.

What does it say on your birth certificate?

The options on mine are,
sex : Male or Female.

Lets be honest, even Male/Female is limited enough.

What about hermaphrodites? XXY chromosomes? XYY? XY but with testosterone inhibited in development, so have female genitalia? Or XX with male genitalia? All naturally occurring before we even venture into the realms of gender.

I really like it as I have the artistic ability of a primary school child (and not one of the good ones) I agree re the judges they seem to waft through any old shite. The whole thing was won by someone who I can only describe as a scribbler, but he certainly ticked a few diversity boxes. Horses for courses I guess...

I really enjoy watching the artists develop their portraits. Couldn't care less about the judges' waffle or who they choose. It's the artistic process and variety of approaches on show that interests me.

Totally agree CMOS and I are staggered that some people just slap seemingly random daubs of paint anywhere and it all comes together. Am in awe of the skill on display.

I think Izzard is happy as a bloke in a dress. If he wanted to be called Edwina or Marjory then it would be polite to refer to him as her when he's wearing a frock.

I know a cross-dresser and used to call him by his female name when he was dressed as a woman and his male name when dressed as a bloke. I think he's given up the frocks in public as he was getting beaten up, which is sickening enough as it is but the bloke's aged around 60 and harmless.
