Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell has received what thankfully appear to be minor injuries as an innocent bystander during a club shooting incident. 10 people on the receiving end and a 16 year old boy arrested.

Not a mass shooting, but man has gun taken from him by crazy bus passenger who forces the bus to go on a rampage at the point of said gun.
It's fascinating that in chases like this, ALL the police get involved. I've seen takedowns of one driver by 20 cops all with guns drawn. Overkill?

DEVELOPING: At least 9 people shot — including children — in ‘random’ attack at splash pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan; suspect barricaded - Sheriff
This is awful. Rochester Hills is one of the nicest communities in the state of Michigan and statistically one of the 20 safest cities, in the United States. I sincerely mean this, if it’s not safe in Rochester Hills, it is not safe anywhere in America.
I see the dad has been charged and is looking at a possible 180 years in jail.
It seems an enormous fucking cop out and diversionary tactic to start going for the parents. Obviously they shouldn’t be letting kids get anywhere near guns but when you have so many legal guns, a mental gun culture and politicians that don’t give a flying fuck, seems a bit much to just pin all the blame on dad

While I agree on the general sentiment of the propblem being societal, the new trend of charging the parents is to be welcomed !!
In this case, the FBI visited the father a year ago, after a threat of a school shooting, which came from a SM account controled by this shooter. When the Feds spoke to the Father, he assured them that while he had weapons, his darling son didn't have un-supervised access to them, & his darling son claimed that his discord account had been "hacked".

One of the victims, Mason Schermerhorn, was autistic. As news of the shooting started to spread, parents posted appeals for information about their children and part of Mason's mother's appeal was instructions on how to calm him down if he was agitated.

What do they call it, "the art of the possible" ?Slick wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 12:01 pmYup. I still think it’s a cop out from the much, much, much bigger issue
There's no feasible way to fix the bigger issue, there's hundreds of millions of guns out there; so the best any single administration can do is nibble at the edges. Achievable goals are to hold those who put the guns into the hands of children, responsible, & a majority of people will support this; then start to bring in basic background checks on people buying guns, so cut down on the number of people with mental health & drug dependency issues who have guns.
Nothing will ever change. Sandy Hook should have been the final straw. The Vegas massacre showed what's entirely possible with people who stockpile assault weapons.
I sometimes wonder - not wish, of course - that maybe if a GOP or NRA big wig had a personal loss in one of these shootings? Would that 'motivate' them to change? But then I feel the establishment and selfish voters would push them out before doing anything substantial. Too many people just don't care unless it personally affects them.

15 year old girl was the shooter apparently. Highly unusual and not the kind of gender equalisation anyone wants to see.
Allegedly she left a manifesto online as a Google doc and posted it before she went to the school. Unfortunately she didn't grant public rights to read it so no one can see what she wrote.sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Dec 17, 2024 9:32 am 15 year old girl was the shooter apparently. Edit -
I'll caveat that by saying I saw it posted on shitter, multiple times, so it could just be fucking shite. Or a deliberate misogynist attempt to exclude women from the shooters club or something equally fucked up but absolutely believable with US and online culture in 2024.

Fucked UP !!!According to The Post’s review of court records, Rupnow’s parents first married in 2011, about two years after she was born.
Mellissa Rupnow had been previously married and divorced, and she had another daughter with a different man to whom she was never married. Court records indicate that this girl — Natalie Rupnow’s half sister — had other permanent legal guardians. The Post was not able to reach the half sister, who is now 20.
Mellissa and Jeff Rupnow divorced for the first time in 2014, agreeing to joint legal custody of their shared daughter, Natalie, but specifying that she would live primarily with her mother.
The couple remarried in 2017 and divorced for a second time in 2020, again agreeing to share custody but, the court records show, dividing Natalie’s time more evenly between them. During this period, Natalie would spend two days with her father, two with her mother, then three more with her father, before reversing the schedule the following week.
Shortly after Rupnow’s parents split up for the second time, the couple remarried once more. But by April 2021 they were petitioning for a third divorce. A judge granted it a month later but noted that “parties [were] admonished concerning remarriage,” according to court records.
After seeking mediation to determine custody of Natalie, they agreed in July 2022 that they would share legal custody but that the girl would now live mostly with her father. By this time, Natalie Rupnow had been enrolled in therapy, which was supposed to help guide decisions about which parent she would spend weekends with, the records show.
The 2022 custody papers said Rupnow’s parents were on cordial terms. “The parents report a generally positive co-parenting relationship,” the document reads, “and will continue to communicate with one another by text messages and phone conversations.”

Instead they treated her like a tradable commodity, so they fought in their endless divorces for how much time each of them spent with her, & not actually focusing on giving her some stability in her life.
I also sense the hand of their "Christianity", in the repeated re-marriage, & inevitable following divorce, which again just pushed her through cycles of hope & despair, as the two people who were supposed to be dedicated to raising her just fucked about with her life.

It won't be the same for every kid, but I knew enough children of divorce while I was at school and then heard from others later as teacher that they hated shifting between parents in the way that's been described. Reading between the lines it often left them feeling unmoored and without a definitive sense of home even if they did want to see both parents. And quite often both parents were keeping score on who had had their days and would prevail upon their kid to cancel plans with friends if things were starting to get uneven.
The constant getting back together and splitting is also dumb as fuck and putting their needs above the child. Lots of kids deep down really want their parents to get back together and this girl had that hope raised and dashed multiple times.

And this is it; the parents think they are showing their child that they both want to be part of their child's life; but in reality, their child often gets the message that neither of their parents wants them around full-time, & in this case, that was reinforced by the multiple changes in visitation, with one, then the other, & then both parents telling the poor kid that they didn't want to live with her full time.sockwithaticket wrote: Wed Dec 18, 2024 6:17 pm Well intentioned doesn't really cut it in my book.

Special agent Althea Duncan is speaking now. She has taken over the case on behalf of the FBI. "This is not a terrorist event," she says. This contradicts the mayor, who earlier described it as such.
There are "improvised explosive devices" found on scene, and they are working to find out if they are "viable" devices.

FBI investigating ramming as 'act of terrorism'
published at 14:20
The FBI has released a statement which says the person who drove the car into a crowd of people is dead and the attack is being investigated as an "act of terrorism". "This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others," it reads.
The statement adds that the person then "engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased".
"The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism," it concludes.
